There are some excellent mods for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion, many of which have been ported to and from other games. Part of the reason the game’s continued popularity is due to its dedicated and knowledgeable mods community. We’re not sure what happened to the developers (who still seemed to be patching the game and releasing DLC), but at some point they were sued by Rebellion, so it’s good that they at least stay in there. The only real “sin” of SOASE is that even after all this time there was no real sequel.
It was a flawed experience, but one that the Ironclad Games team tried to iterate through several expansions like Trinity and then the ‘final’ edition of the game with Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion 2012. Originally released in 2008, it combined the best of RTS games and 4X games to create a wonderfully ruthless space-based strategy experience, with fleets of capital and sub-capital ships dancing from system to system as you scramble for dominance over random maps fought. Sins of a Solar Empire was a great entry-level strategy game for its time.
